Yesterday I previewed the nine PGA Tour rookies who earned their card via the Nationwide Tour. Today I’ll introduce the nine rookies who qualified via December’s Q-School tournament.
- Troy Merritt (Age 25, PGA Tour Starts = 0)
Merritt’s next PGA Tour start will be his first, but he is no stranger to playing quality golf. In two years at Boise State University Merritt won nine times. As a Nationwide Tour rookie in 2009 he won the Mexico Open, finishing #39 on the money list. Merritt rounded out his 2009 season as the Q-School medalist, finishing at 22-under par, one shot ahead of PGA Tour veteran Jeff Maggert - Martin Flores (27, 1)
Flores only started nine times on the 2009 Nationwide Tour, making the cut in four events and finishing at #156 on the money list. That didn’t matter much in December as he shot 18-under par to finish 4th at Q-School and earn his 2010 PGA Tour membership - Billy Horschel (23, 3)
Horschel was a three-time First-Team All-American at the University of Florida during his college career. Graduating in 2009, he finished #166 on the Nationwide Tour money list before finishing Q-School at 16-under par in 7th place - Graham DeLaet (26, 2)
Canadian Tour veteran DeLaet will test his mettle on the big stage in 2010 after finishing Q-School at 15-under par (T8). DeLaet was the Canadian Tour’s Rookie of the Year in 2007 and the Player of the Year in 2009 - Chris Wilson (25, 1)
Wilson finished tied for 12th with a total score of 12-under par. A Hooters Tour player, Wilson started at the 2009 Memorial Tournament where he missed the cut - Rickie Fowler (20, 8 )
2010 PGA Tour Rookie Rickie Fowler
The youngest member of the 2010 rookie class, Fowler might also be the most heralded.
Having made 8 starts on the PGA Tour, including a playoff loss in last year’s Frys.com Open, Fowler is a two-time member of the US Walker Cup team with a 7-1 record over the two years.
Fowler qualified for full membership on the PGA Tour by finishing Q-School tied for 15th at 11-under par. - Brian Stuard (27, 0)
Stuard missed his PGA Tour card by two strokes after shooting a final-day 74 at the 2008 Q-School. Playing on the 2009 Nationwide Tour, he entered the season’s final event at #23 on the money list but a missed birdie putt on the 72nd hole led to a 14th place finish wasn’t good enough to keep him there, dropping him to #26 for the season.
At December’s Q-School, Stuard put together six solid rounds which included back-to-back birdies on his final two holes to ensure his 2010 PGA Tour card. - Cameron Tringale (22, 1)
Three-time All-American at Georgia Tech, Tringale qualified for the 2010 PGA Tour by finishing at 10-under par at Q-School (T19). Tringale is a former Walker Cup and Palmer Cup team member - Brent Delahoussaye (27, 1)
Another Clemson Tiger joins the PGA Tour in 2010. 2005 graduate Delahoussaye played on the Nationwide Tour in 2008 and 2009, finishing at #79 on the 2009 money list. He qualified for his 2010 PGA Tour card by shooting 9-under par over the six days of Q-School, good for a T23 finish
